2016-2020 Deepwater Spend to Total USD 137 Billion – Sustained Low Oil Price Sinks Deepwater ProjectsMay 12, 2016 The need to offset declining onshore and shallow water reserves has led to a greater focus on the deepwater market. However, the oil price environment has resulted in declining exploration activity – 2015 discoveries dropped by 56% when compared to 2013. Sustained low oil prices have raised further concerns over the viability of many deepwater developments, leading operators to consider alternative development options or defer sanctioning of new projects. The market downturn has initiated a rethink within parts of the industry, resulting in a move towards standardisation and the streamlining of development processes. [ In 3/4 2016 ]

Waking Up to The Digital DawnMay 12, 2016 As the volatile oil price continues to hit new lows and put further pressure on productivity, limiting CAPEX and OPEX across all segments of the global oil and gas industry is now a fundamental goal. The need for a rapid shift change to counter the long-term impact of the changing market requires increased investment, more speed in new technology utilisation, combined with a smarter and more collaborative way of working. Can Casing Centralizers Be Pulled and Rerun?May 12, 2016 The typical spread cost of a deepwater, semi-submersible rig is now around USD 450,000 per day. For wells that hit trouble, the average time lost per well is probably about six days, which would give average downtime costs of USD 450,000 x 6, or an eye-watering USD 2.7 million. Let’s suppose the problem gets fixed in three days, you are still looking at a totally unacceptable figure given the present oil economic climate. [ In 3/4 2016 ]
Commentary, 1/2 2016Feb 12, 2016 Down But Not Out
As the industry watches and waits, wondering if we’ve seen the price of oil bottom out, it’s good to remind ourselves that much still remains to be done on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). [ In 1/2 2016 ]
Efficiency and Savings Delivered Through LearningFeb 12, 2016 The delay and cancellation of a number of high profile oil and gas field developments is testament to the challenge currently facing the oil and gas industry to reduce cost and improve efficiency. Limiting capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operating expenditure (OPEX) for pipeline projects has become an essential project goal. [ In 1/2 2016 ]
All in a Day’s Work – Asset Tracking Enabled by Satellite M2M is Helping Users Redefine Supply Chain EfficiencyFeb 12, 2016 Experts have pinpointed IoT – the Internet of Things – as one of the most significant growth sectors in communications. All those internet-enabled “things” only come into their own if they can communicate, but many devices and applications are likely to fall outside the easy reach of wireless and GSM communications. Gavan Murphy, Director of Marketing for EMEA at Globalstar explains how satellite-enabled state-of-the-art asset tracking is helping oil and gas industry players to truly harness the power of IoT to work smarter. Industry Collaboration Increases Scientific Understanding of the Potential Effects of E&P Sound on Marine LifeFeb 12, 2016 Despite the highly competitive nature of the oil and gas industry, it has a long history of collaboration to develop a better understanding of the potential impacts of our activities. For example, the industry collaborates exceptionally well on its first and foremost priority of managing health, safety and environmental issues. The Joint Industry Programme (JIP) on Exploration & Production (E&P) Sound & Marine Life (SML) is a sterling example of this. [ In 1/2 2016 ]

From the Editor, 11/12 2015Dec 4, 2015 A Positive New Year
Looking back at 2015, it’s easy to focus on low, unstable oil prices. But it’s definitely more useful to look back at how the industry has risen to the challenges these prices have created. [ In 11/12 2015 ]
Norway Fortunes – Drilling and “Recycling”Dec 4, 2015 Some 25,000 of an estimated 350,000 offshore workforce have been laid off in Norway this year, according to employment office stats. Another 40,000 are notified of potential joblessness. Over half of these notices stem from an oversupply in historically cyclical shipping and newly cyclical rig markets. Against this, the five exploration wells drilled in November cap a 57-well 2015 campaign offshore Norway that saw more wells drilled than ever were seen in the UK-sector’s most prolific years. Look hard, and you’ll see, as well, that engineers – the “costs culprits”, to some – have engineered a bridge to better times. [ In 11/12 2015 ]
