As we prepared this issue for press, the International Energy Agency (IEA) – an autonomous body within the (OECD) framework – released the 2012 issue of theWorld Energy Outlook. The WEO is always of interest – and it always contains focal points that stand out, piquing the interest of the public at large.

Conserve Your Energy

Here we are again at the end of an exciting year, as we wonder where the year has gone. Each year seems busier than the last, which, of course, contributes to how fast the time flies.

But this, much like each year before, has had its share of events that have kept the industry and us very busy. Our NCS project survey in this issue takes a look at where the big money will be spent in the coming year, which looks to be another record breaker.

A fourth straight record year of oil-gas spending is wrapping up, and the list of projects points to a record 2013. Spurring spending are 22 discoveries made in 2011, including oil in the Barents Sea. Wells drilled in 2012, too, have confirmed the giant discoveries Johan Svedrup and Skrugard eliminate the North Sea’s “mature” moniker and uncertainty in Arctic licenses. By William Stoichevski.

Oil and gas companies continue to move into new and increasingly harsh and remote environments to meet the world’s growing demand for energy. For example, the potential wealth of natural resources in the Arctic is leading organisations to show an increased interest in this region. However, exploring new frontiers, as well as constructing new facilities carries risks and underlines the importance of understanding, mitigating and managing the associated operational risks. Optimising the design, operability and safety of FPSOs (floating production storage offloading vessels) is one such area that must be duly considered.
