But the country is changing from an agrarian and industrial economy to a powerhouse of new service development for a growing middle class. But can real innovation take place in a society without real personal liberty?

When Scandinavian Oil-Gas Magazine interviewed the head of Teekay’s gas business a year ago, he cited a distinct slowness in the pace of project approvals: a year-long project drought. Since then, no fewer than a dozen projects have been given some sort of nod – regulatory, financial or technical.

Benson K. Whitney has been the US Ambassador to Norway for a little more than two years. As such, he has represented his country in a period with a certain level of spirited debate surrounding the relationship between our two countries. But even so, the relationship between these close allies remains strong and stable. Whitney has been an open and visible Ambassador, and recently made a very favourable impression on the Norwegian public when he appeared on the prime time Friday night talk show Grosvold. He didn’t talk much about oil and gas issues there, however, so that left it up to Scandinavian Oil-Gas Magazine to sit down with Ambassador Whitney and talk energy. Which we were happy to do.

Suppose we were playing a guessing game. You might begin by asking: Animal? Vegetable? Mineral? If the word you were trying to guess was “Commodity”, the answer would have to be “Yes” to all three questions.
