The Future of The North Sea 2007-2008 – A Norwegian PerspectiveAug 20, 2007 Without doubt, the main topic for the Norwegian oil and gas industry, particularly in the exploration and production (E&P) circles, is the well publicised merger of Statoil and Norsk Hydro’s oil and gas divisions and the ramifications that it will have for the sector as a whole as we head into 2008. Getting Candid on Carbon Capture n’ StorageAug 20, 2007 The campaign to curb global warming by storing carbon in oilfields and saline aquifers never threatened to derail as much as in the few weeks before we went to print. Former UK Deputy Energy Secretary Lord Truscott heralded a major November 2007 tender for six consortia keen on carbon capture and storage, or CCS, while BP pulled out of the Peterhead carbon-hydrogen project and formed Hydrogen Energy with coal miner Rio Tinto. Then Statoil and Shell scratched plans for large-scale carbon injection at the Heidrun field. As we went to press, the only carbon cheer came with news of progress on ConocoPhillips far-reaching plan for carbon injection offshore Britain. Only a “good price for carbon” stood in the oil company’s way. [ In 7/8-2007 ]

Commentary, 3/4 2007Apr 16, 2007 StatoilHydro Shapes Up
StatoilHydro has come a long way in the process of becoming a single entity. Probably the most obvious indicator is the first word of the first sentence above – the “new” name for the “new” Norwegian oil and gas company. Following the lead of super major mergers such as ExxonMobil and ChevronTexaco, StatoilHydro has chosen to use CamelCase or BumpyCase – a medial capital – to create a name that melds its two parts, anticipating a sense of continuity. The implication is that nothing will be lost as the entities merge. [ In 3/4-2007 ]
From the Editor: Sixty Years OnApr 16, 2007 As we prepared this issue, we strove to keep in mind something Arnis Judzis, chairman of the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) Board of Directors, related to us: “This year, OTC will mark the 60th anniversary of the development of the modern offshore industry. In 1947, drilling in 15 feet of water was a challenge, and drilling out of sight of land was a major technical milestone. Engineers of that time could not conceive of drilling in water depths much over 50 feet. But today, advanced technology has pushed that limit to water depths of 10,000 feet….” [ In 3/4-2007 ]
