More than 1 billion barrels of oil are produced annually from the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). But nothing lasts forever, especially not non-renewable energy sources. Oil discoveries on the NCS has for many years been less than what is produced. In 2001 that was also the case for gas production and exploration. Discoveries counted for less than what was produced. PipeCareDec 11, 2003 Statoil’s wholly owned subsidiary PipeCare, is now well positioned to pipe revenues back to Statoil, taking advantage of years of pipeline expertise. While their recent innovation Optopig, is getting most attention, President Ola Nestaas is keen to underline that PipeCare provides a whole range of services and expertise connected to pipelaying and maintenance. The troubled project with a water injection platform has been well covered in the news. But there is another, very successful, project going on as well – the North and South Flank development. Norway has been an oil producing country for 30 years. The Norwegian state and the Norwegian people have gained considerably from the developments that have taken place offshore on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. The reason for the general increase in people’s welfare is that we live in one of the best functioning democracies in the world. Our standards are set in a small country where business and political practices are relatively transparent. Far from perfect, but on a different level entirely from what we see in many other oil countries. [ In 9/10-2002 ]
