Suncor Energy takes action on Alberta government order

Suncor Energy Inc. confirmed plans to shut down one of two upgraders at the company’s oil sands operations near Fort McMurray to complete maintenance during a scheduled shutdown. The work, which is scheduled to begin May 16, 2008, is expected to last approximately 30 days. During this period, the other upgrader is expected to continue to operate at production volumes of approximately 200,000 barrels per day (bpd).

The shutdown is planned to support safe, reliable operation of upgrading assets as Suncor works to achieve its average oil sands production targets of 275,000 to 285,000 bpd in 2008.

Approximately 2,000 contractors will be involved in the work. Suncor will focus on completing the work in a safe manner while minimizing impacts to the environment. Although this work may result in periods of increased flaring and the potential for odours, Suncor intends to minimize these impacts and ensure emissions levels remain within regulated limits.
