StatoilHydro and partner Gaz de France have made a gas discovery in the arctic Barents Sea off northern Norway’s North Cape, although Norwegian officials said it was too early to know whether the find could be made commercial.

Exploration well 7224/6-1 targeted the Arenaria prospect in strata of rock defined by Eni's Goliat field nearby to the west.

It was the first Licence 394 well drilled in the Round 19 acreage award. Transocean’s Polar Pioneer drilled the well to a vertical depth of 2,315 metres. Water in the area is 265 metres deep.

Scandoil.com will have full coverage of oil company appreciations of coming arctic operations at next week’s ONS 2008 trade show and conference in Stavanger southwestern Norway.
