StatoilHydro’s Kaarstoe gas-fired plant, site of a future carbon-capture and recovery project, has been mostly mothballed since it opened late in 2007 due to low electrictity prices and high gas prices.
The Norwegian energy giant owns the plant 50-50 with Norwegian national power utility Statkfraft.
At its peak, the plant produced 56 gigawatt hours of electricity. But for seven of its 11-week history, the plant has been shut down for not being “profitable”, newspaper Aftenposten has reported.
Kaarstoe is one of the sites picked to have fully operational post-combustion carbon capture technology attached.
