The Canadian supply chain has come up with a novel way to speed the development of oilfields in remote northern locations — by heavylift “blimp”.
Boeing has reportedly received the first cash in a contract to build Calgary supplier Skyhook International Inc’s Jess Heavy Lifter, a blimp-like aircraft carries with realy lifting power. The helium-filled aircraft is powered by four rotors “dedicated to lifting the payload”, a statement said.
The first JHL 40 aircraft will be able to lift 40 tonnes over 400 kilometres of “Alaska” or “the Canadian Arctic” without refuelling. The craft is billed as ideal in regions where infractructure is wanting, speeding development.
“There is a definite need for this type technology,” said SkyHook chief exec Peter Jess.
“The list of customers (in a range of industries) waiting for SkyHook’s services is extensive, and they enthusiastically support the development of JHL 40.” Two prototypes will be built for regulator approval.
