“Hundreds of permanent jobs” might never be created in Alaska if Royal Dutch Shell’s fortunes do not change in the Arctic oil province, the supermajor said in a statement late Wednesday, after a U.S. appeals court blocked Beaufort Sea drilling.
Environmentalist arguments that drilling would hurt the environment were accepted, and the court agreed to convene again in December, news agency Reuters reported.
Icebreakers had been ordered to clear laneways for the drilling of at least four wells. The Beaufort will freeze over by December.
Whaling and environmental groups reportedly said the U.S. Minerals Management Service approval of Shell drilling plans in February 2007 fell short of studying the harmful impacts of drilling.
