Irish oil minnow Providence Resources was the toast of Dublin Monday for tracing a 75-foot column of oil and gas in a well appraising the Hook Head field in the Celtic Sea.

Well 50/11-3 Hook Head was drilled in 240 feet water 60 kilometres offshore, where geology once mapped by Marathon Oil showed a cresting structure.

The 14-block and part-block “Standard Exploration License” No. 2/07 gave up light oil and gas after after 4,880 metres of drilling. Wireline showed a 484 gross interval of hydrocarbons like those seen at the 50/11-1 & 2 discoveries 2.5 km and 5 kim away to the southwest.

Casing will be set prior to testing, management said in a statement.

Field operator Providence Resources, with 43.5 percent, is joined at Hook Head by Challenger Minerals, Dyas, Atlantic Petroleum, Forest Gate Resources and Sosina Exploration.
