U.S. independent Leed Petroleum has encountered “true pay” while drilling the Eugene Island A-7 well in the Gulf of Mexico.

Drilling continues beyond 14,000 feet, but electric line logs show 34 feet of vertical pay in an unexpected area. Total depth and the “primary objective” will be reached “in the third quarter of 2008”.

The Eugene Island Blocks lie in 80 feet of water some 100 kilometres offshore Morgan City Louisiana.

“While the discovery of this zone is good news, drilling continues and we await the results of the more promising objectives at deeper depths," a statement said.
