Fugro has won a contract to Sonatrech-Wintershall joint venture Galsi to plot a gas pipeline route from Algeria to Italy, a 529-kilometre length in water up to 2,850 metres deep.

The €18-million detailed marine survey of the Mediterranean Sea will pick out the best route for the GALSI line to southern Sardinia, and then onward from the north of the island to the Italian mainland.

The work will finish in spring 2008 with a report due out a few months later.

Company geophysics and hydrographics vessel Geo Prospector and an autonomous underwater vehicle, or AUV, plus two support boats will complete the study.

Edison, Enel, Hera and Sardinian company Sfirs round out the GARSI joint-venture partners.
