A business of Iraq contractor Fluor Corp. and Scottish Southern Energy’s rnewable energy division Airtriciity have been given “exclusivity” to develop “an offshore wind farm” at Bell Rock off Scotland.
It’ll be the first test for the United Kingdom’s new centralized decisionmaking on granting licenses to offshore wind developers. Site consultations and environmental impact assessments are still expected to take time.
A 93-square kilometre 10 km offshore is the chosen site for the 700-megawatt wind park. It’s not yet known whose “state of the art turbines” will be used.
Fluor and Airtricity are also developing the world’s largest offshore wind farm, Greater Gabbard. A construction contract has already been signed for Greater Gabbard, a 500 MW project in the Thames Estuary set to power 415,000 homes.
