The European Commission has reportedly given Norwegian classification society DNV the job of honing “a process” that will “speed up, integrate, and optimise” the commercial application in Europe of carbon capture and storage, or CCS.
The EC aims to hurry the construction of a set of CCS demonstration projects by 2015, and the Continent is hoping successful carbon plant will help meet 2020 emissions-reductions targets.
To that end, the Commission is creating a knowledge-sharing network of CCS demo projects, though a network of research programmes already exists. DNV is understood to be tasked with ensuring little is done in duplicate and all are communicating to one end — speedy CCS.
European carbon-cutting demos will be invited to join the network and gain from shared knowledge. A cost savings is expected for those embarking on research that might already be well-advanced in some centres.
To help spread knowledge, DNV will organise events and build a Web-based platform for sharing experiences.
“The project network will be developed into a service-orientated entity working in the interest of the participating projects,” a DNV statement said.
