The relationship between India and the IEA took a further step forward on 27 November with the launch in New Delhi of the India Energy Outlook, a special report in the World Energy Outlook series.
The special report was presented by IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol, accompanied by Arvind Panagariya, the Vice-Chairman of the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog), and Dhamendra Pradhan, the Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas. An audience of senior officials, company representatives and other energy experts was joined by a large contingent of Indian print and television media.
The discussion session that followed the Executive Director's presentation covered a range of topics, including the importance of affordable low-carbon and high-efficiency technology to India's energy outlook, the potential for alternative transport fuels and electric vehicles, policy options for India to enhance its energy security, and the perspectives for closer institutional ties between India and the IEA.
While in New Delhi, Dr. Birol also met with Piyush Goyal, the Minister of Power, Coal and New and Renewable Energy, to discuss areas in which the India and the IEA could co-operate in the light of the outcomes of the recent IEA Ministerial meeting in Paris.
