JDR, supplier of subsea power cables and umbilicals to the global offshore energy industry, has been selected by US Wind Inc., as the preferred cable partner for its first offshore wind project.
The project is the 750MW Maryland Development project, with an expected contract value in excess of US $275 million. The project will include management and engineering of the full electrical cable supply and installation scope.
“The USA is a growing market opportunity and of strategic importance for the offshore renewable industry. This contract award demonstrates customer confidence in JDR as the leading cable partner of choice,” says JDR CEO, David Currie.
Expected to be the largest offshore wind farm to date in the USA, the Maryland Development project will include a maximum of 187 turbines in water depths up to 30 metres, and will be located 24 kilometres (15 miles) off the coast. The project is subject to offshore renewable energy credit (OREC) in 2017 and final investment decision (FID) in 2018. JDR will supply and install both inter-array and export cables.
To support the project, JDR will establish a storage and mobilisation facility in Maryland. The company will also open a project management and engineering office base.
Currie continues, “Our track record of technology leadership, reliability and partnering for customer success in complex and harsh environments is the basis for this award. We are extremely proud to be selected by US Wind Inc. for the full cable package. Our offering will play an important role in ensuring its success. We are excited to embark on the next stage in JDR’s evolution, while developing relationships with the Maryland authorities and supporting local job creation.”
Paul Rich, Director of Project Development for US Wind Inc. says, “US Wind is proud to be a local, Maryland-based company bringing a new industry to the state along with thousands of manufacturing jobs for generations, as we establish the hub for offshore wind manufacturing for the entire east coast of the US.”
“JDR Cables is a world-class leader in the industry and just one of many future examples of US Wind’s commitment to bring the world’s best companies to Maryland. US Wind will create a net export industry for the state and deliver responsible, transformative development to maximise economic benefits at the lowest impact to ratepayers,” adds Rich.
JDR’s scope of supply for the Maryland Development Project includes project management, engineering and manufacture of 196 km of inter-array cable, 180 km of export cable (split into 3 lengths) and cable accessories. Cable installation for both inter-array, export cables and termination and testing of both cable types will also be provided by JDR. Cable manufacture is expected to commence in 2018 with delivery and installation in 2019 and 2020. Engineering works will begin in 2017.
