On 9 April, at the Ocean Business exhibition and training forum in Southampton, to acclaim from marine scientists at all stages of their career, the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) unveiled the key findings of its consultation on developing a career pathway for a new generation of Marine Science professionals; and the next steps to be taken.
IMarEST carried out the global consultation on Marine Science Skills and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in the final quarter of 2012 in association with other prominent learned societies, associations, industry, academia and governmental players.
The aim of the consultation was to inform the production of a guidance document for all those wishing to follow, or who are already following, a career path in the marine science profession. The overall goal of the pathway, published yesterday, is to ensure Marine Scientists are best placed to face the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in different stages of their career.
“We are extremely grateful to the Marine Scientists at all stages of their career, and from around the world, who responded to our consultation; and to employers of Marine Scientists who also took part; the findings make fascinating reading,” says David Loosley, Chief Executive of IMarEST. “Their views and opinions most certainly provided strong signposts for our pathway. We now know what we have to achieve, and – importantly – how we are going to rise to the challenge.
