DNV Software secures major contract with Keppel-Spotlight

DNV has just IMO-approved the biological sewage treatment plant from Gertsen & Olufsen, Stand B01-30e, a leading Scandinavian developer of a.o. sewage treatment systems targeted ships and offshore-use.

The revised guidelines on treatment of black water, IMO MECP 159(55) Resolution, come into effect on January 1, 2010. As the resolution entails new and significantly stricter standards, it represents a massive challenge to shipbuilders and -designers. The guidelines apply to sewage treatment plants on ships of 400 grt and above as well as on smaller ships certified to carry a crew of more than 15.

One answer to the technological challenge has surfaced following DNV's approval of the G&O Bioreactor in accordance with the new IMO resolution. The fully biological sewage treatment plant is the first of its kind to comply with the resolution.

"We are proud to receive the approval. Our Bioreactor represents the next generation of biological sewage plants and designed to handle all kinds of human waste water from any vessel and offshore platform. And on top of now being on par and even better than the 2010-guidelines, the plant is as environmentally friendly as they come. It works with UV light sterilization and uses no chemicals in the process," said Thorsten Larsen-Seul, Managing Director with Gertsen & Olufsen, a leading Scandinavian developer and producer of marine technology and present at Norshipping at Stand B01-30e.

"I believe that biological wastewater treatment will play an even more significant role in the years to come, and it is very positive that there is now an approved, chemical-free and environment-friendly solution on the market," said Thorsten Larsen-Seul.

The Danish developed and manufactured sewage treatment plant, of which more than 250 in various configurations have been installed onboard ships with a.o. the Royal Danish Navy, Maersk and lately "Ship of the year 2008", Isabella Kosan, is designed as an "Aerated Submerged Fixed Bed Unit."
