The oilfields of the Caspian Sea will be cleared of frozen hazards by three new firefighting icebreakers from Aker Arctic akin to those already seen at the giant Kashagan oilfield.
A new company, Caspian Offshore Construction, has placed the 750-million-kroner ($112 million) order with STX Europe's (former Aker Yards) Aker Arctic, the Finland-based icebreaker experts.
Caspian Offshore will begin operating the ships in the Kashagan field in 2010 and 2011.
Called icebreaker tugs, the ships also do rescue and are based on the models that have cleared the Kashagan field for a decade.
