Dr Nikolas Tsakos of Tsakos Energy Navigation Ltd was re-elected for 2 further years by the INTERTANKO Council who met last week in London.
The Council members benefited from an excellent dialogue with the IMO Secretary General, Mr Kitack Lim, as well as the Rt Hon John Hayes CBE, Minister of State (Department for Transport).
Mr Lim, who has been Secretary General since January 2016, expressed his positive views about the contribution of INTERTANKO to the regulatory process at IMO: “Let me say first of all that the contribution made by INTERTANKO to the regulatory process at IMO has been of tremendous value over many decades. Your input is always clear, precise and, invariably, moves the process towards a better outcome. I know I speak for the IMO Member States when I commend you for such active and positive engagement. It really is very much appreciated and I look forward to it continuing into the future.”
The Rt Hon John Hayes CBE, whose role as Minister of State (Department for Transport) covers the shipping industry, also addressed the Council, where he provided a brief view on the impact of BREXIT. As part of his responsibility for maritime affairs in the UK he pledged to champion the shipping industry and praised INTERTANKO’s role within it.
In the discussions that followed, the Council decided that, thanks in no small part to Dr Tsakos’ excellent leadership coupled with the hard work of the Association’s Secretariat, Membership fees that were reduced by 10% in 2010 and by another 5% in 2012, would remain the same for another year.
Dr Tsakos praised the efforts of the Secretariat, who he commended for having adapted and reacted quickly to Member needs and demands over the years.
