Chevron Corporation says that C.N. "Sandy" Macfarlane has been appointed general tax counsel and an officer of the corporation. In this position, Macfarlane will direct Chevron's tax activities. He succeeds Thomas R. Schuttish who has retired after 30 years with the company.

"Sandy is a recognized tax professional within the broader energy tax community," said John Watson, Chevron's chairman and chief executive officer. "His proven record of achievement in providing counsel on complex tax matters will be invaluable as he takes over the leadership role of our tax function."

Macfarlane received a bachelors degree from Brown University in 1976, a law degree from Boston College in 1979 and a masters in tax law from Boston University in 1985. During his 25 years with Chevron, he has worked in a succession of positions within the tax department including coordinator of tax audits and litigation, managing tax attorney, manager of tax compliance and most recently as assistant general tax counsel.

Macfarlane is chair of the American Petroleum Institute's Industry Statements Tax Committee and serves on the Executive Committee of Tax Executives Institute. He is also a member of the American Bar Association.

Commenting on Schuttish, Watson said: "Thom's deep understanding and proven expertise on global tax matters has made him a trusted and valued advisor to me and our senior management team at Chevron. He built Chevron's global tax capabilities by championing technical competence, experience and delivering practical solutions."
