AWE accelerates search for gas in southeast Australia-Spotlight

AWE Ltd (“AWE”) started drilling the Kopuwai-1 well at 1300 hours on September 29, 2007. At 0600 hours (NZ time) today, the Ocean Patriot drilling rig was preparing to drill ahead after cementing surface casing at a measured depth of 234 metres.

Kopuwai-1 is in New Zealand’s western Taranaki basin in PEP 38482, approximately 10 kilometres north of the Tui Area oil project in 125 metres of water. The well has a planned total depth of 4,060 metres.

AWE’s 50% interest is fully carried for the budgeted costs of the Kopuwai-1 well as a result of the recently reported farmouts.

Participants in PEP 38482 are: AWE (Operator) 50.0% Mitsui E & P Australia Pty Ltd 30.0% Beach Petroleum (NZ) Pty Ltd 20.0%
