New underwater “radio” technology to tell valves when to shut-off, help divers communicate and otherwise eliminate some connector technology has been given development help.

The U.K. Department of Trade and Industry’s Technology Program has given a $560,000 grant to Wireless Fibre Systems, which will lead a £1.1 million two-year research project consortium.

Aberdeen-based Tritech International and Insensys Ltd. are onboard for the R&D which is “set to revolutionize underwater wireless communications” via gear that “works like a modem”.

“Over the next two years, we will develop and launch a number of disruptive sub-sea RF products that will enhance communications, control, networking and safety," a consortium statement said.

Wireless communications have relied mainly on slower acoustic techniques affected by outside noise and unable to penetrate water or air.
