The European Union has approved a joint-venture of Wärtsilä and Hyundai Heavy Idustries formed to build dual-drive engines for carriers of liquefied natural gas, or LNG.
The engines will power Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Taiwanese shipbuilding and ensure market share for Wärtsilä designs, which compete worldwide with Rolls Royce and others, many of which boast environmental and fuel-saving benefits.
The jointly run Wärtsilä-Hyundai Engine Company Ltd. will deliver a first engine in the second half of 2008, the first of dozens seen leaving the 50-50 owned workshops in the years to come.
Wärtsilä engines offers money-saving condition-based maintenance, or CBM, where engine repairs are scheduled according to the results of remotely analysed electronic monitoring.
