A drill rig boring into the Caspian basin for London-based Max Petroleum has hit unexpected high-pressure shallow gas, forcing an evacuation, the company announced Wednesday.

Max had only just informed Kazakh officials of its intentions at the Zhana Makat field, when the high pressure mix of inert gas, salt water and combustible gas damaged the Skytop Brewster 750 drill rig drilling exploration well ZMA-A6.

The flow of water and drilling fluids to the surface was contained in a limited area around the well location, a statement said.

Drilling has been suspended.
